Eoghan Murphy slams Sinn Fein’s ‘unconstitutional’ rent freeze bill – Extra.ie

Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy has said that Sinn Fein’s rent freeze idea is ‘unconstitutional’ and wouldn’t help those most in need.

The Rent Freeze (Fair Rent) Bill 2019 was debated in the Dail yesterday evening. 

The Sinn Fein bill suggests rents across the country would be frozen for the next three years.

The legislation, which is also being backed by Fianna Fail, may be passed in the Dail by the end of the week.

However, Minister for Housing Eoghan Murphy has stated that he believes a rent freeze would be ‘unconstitutional’ and would do more harm than good.

‘Where is the evidence [a rent freeze] would work?’ Minister Murphy asked Sinn Fein in the Dail.
