It will be “the state’s responsibility” to ensure that tenants who have lost work due to Covid-19 can continue to pay their rent, Ireland’s landlord body has said.
It was confirmed yesterday that buy-to-let mortgage owners will be able to avail of mortgage freezes of up to three months from their bank.
When asked if landlords whose mortgage payments had been frozen would also freeze their tenants’ rent, the Irish Property Owners Association (IPOA) said it was instead encouraging tenants to apply for the Housing Assistance Payment (HAP).
This is a scheme where a tenant struggling to afford their rent makes a small payment to their local authority, while the state makes a direct payment to the landlord to cover the rent.
