Renters in house shares where another tenant has left have been urged to try to strike deals with landlords, due to concerns that some are being asked to cover the foregone rent.
Threshold, the housing charity, said it has received multiple calls from people living in house shares where one or more tenants have left the property during the Covid-19 outbreak.
In several of these situations, the remaining tenants have been asked to pay a higher rent to cover the balance of the money due to the landlord.
John-Mark McCafferty, the chief executive of Threshold, said that while normally the remaining tenants could easily let out the vacant room, this has proven almost impossible due to the coronavirus outbreak.
