The Royal Hibernian Academy (RHA) has set up a fundraising campaign for struggling Irish artists — and the donations are set to exceed €50,000.
The RHA has donated €10,000 to the fund from the Hennessy Craig award, the largest painting prize in Ireland, which grants €20,000 to a single painter every two years.
“Every other year there is an award,” said Vanessa Moss, development officer at the art institution, who is organising the RHA’s Really Helping Artists campaign. “Does it make sense to give €20,000 to one person next year, when €10,000 of that could do so much for artists now?”
An RHA crowdfunding appeal has surpassed €26,500, and an anonymous donor will pledge €10,000 to the fund once it reaches €30,000.
