Government plan to make tenants prove they can't pay rent due to COVID-19 slammed as 'confusing and unfair' – Dublin Live

Tenants will have to prove they are not able to pay their rent because of Covid-19 if they want to avoid eviction when the Government passes new laws.

Legislation will also make it a criminal offence to make a false declaration.

Newly-appointed Housing Minister Darragh O’Brien will present the Residential Tenancies and Valuation Bill 2020 to his Cabinet colleagues today.

However, it has been slammed by opposition parties as “confusing, unfair and full of holes”.

The proposed Bill is then expected to be presented to the Dail tomorrow and later to the Seanad.

Mr O’Brien hopes it will pass both houses of the Oireachtas by the end of the week and it would be expected to come into effect on August 2.
