Some undocumented Irish immigrants in the United States have returned home to Ireland during the pandemic to avoid becoming homeless, the founder of a suicide prevention charity has said.
Joan Freeman, also a former presidential candidate, said it was a “life-changing decision” because they “can never come back” to the US.
Out-of-work immigrants, who mainly work in bars and restaurants, have been left on the brink of homelessness after months without work because they are not entitled to any state assistance. It is believed there are about 15,000 undocumented Irish living in the US.
Ms Freeman said the undocumented Irish who remained in the US are feeling isolated and disconnected from loved ones in Ireland.
