A PUB owner who runs a 223-year-old family bar in Mayo has told how she is preparing to reopen her ‘wet pub’ after the six months closure saw her just months away from shutting the ancient pub for good.

Marie Mellett runs a 223-year-old family business in Swinford, Co Mayo, which was months away from shutting permanently as ‘wet pubs’ struggled to cope with mounting costs.

The 35 year-old, who was ensuring essential renovation work was carried out at Mellett’s Emporium, believes all pubs should have been allowed to reopen months ago.

Marie said: “It’s a massive relief.

“We’ve a good, strong, solid business and we’re built up over 223 years, but even at that we couldn’t survive
