Belfast landlords should not have to provide emergency 24-hour contact number to deal with antisocial behaviour, High Court told – Belfast Telegraph

Private landlords in Belfast are being unreasonably required to give an emergency 24-hour contact number to deal with any antisocial behaviour, the High Court heard today.

Lawyers representing the Landlords Association for Northern Ireland (LANI) claim it is an impracticable obligation for members with up to 100 tenants on their books.

Failure to comply could lead to prosecution or being taken off the Houses in Multiple Occupancy (HMO) licence register, it was contended.

Barrister Donal Sayers QC argued that landlords contacted in the middle of the night would be able to do nothing more than could be achieved during office hours.

He said: “The provision of an out of hours contact number is not a reasonable or practicable step to prevent antisocial behaviour.”
