Mary Lou McDonald has revealed a suite of election-style spending promises ahead of the new Dail session yesterday, drawing accusations of “auction politics” from the government, and media questions over her command of the detail of the party’s fiscal policies.

The Sinn Fein leader pledged measures to cut rent by up to €1,500 a year, cut the cost of childcare by two thirds and grant “the right to retire on a state pension at the age of 65”.
