It can cost an extra £80 a week to hire a car if you are over 70 while some companies refuse to provide vehicles at all — or make them take a driving test first.

Centauro, Record Rent a Car, Firefly and Goldcar charge more for over-70s. The charges — which arise because it is more expensive to insure older drivers — are often hidden in the terms and conditions and not always made clear when a car is booked online.

Many car hire offices are franchises, which means they may struggle to get the best deals from insurers, and different offices of the same company can have different rules.
