Tullamore councillor wants social housing used as safe houses – The Times

A Tullamore councillor wants to use social housing stock for the county’s first safe houses for victims of domestic violence.

Ken Smollen, an independent councillor, submitted the motion to Offaly county council on January 10, two days before Ashling Murphy was attacked and killed in Tullamore last week. The killing has prompted a national debate about all types of violence against women.

The proposals will be debated at the council’s meeting next month. If passed, the council would be required to “urgently” allocate three units of its own housing stock — or rent them from an approved housing body — in Tullamore, Birr and Edenderry to be used as safe houses for both male and female victims of domestic violence, and their families.
